About Blue Horizon

The staff at Blue Horizon has extensive experience and training working with those suffering from eating disorders. All Clinical staff have advanced degrees in their field of expertise. The directors of Blue Horizon have work experience in acute, residential and outpatient care. It is recognized that patients, families and professionals in the community are looking for education and guidance to meet individual treatment goals. Beyond the excellent clinical care received in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the Partial Day Program (PHP), training and case management services will be provided using the most current information available regarding insurance coverage, treatment options and researched data based education. At all levels of service, our staff remains sensitive to the financial and emotional burden of eating disorder treatment. Communication with family, insurance representatives and all care team professionals is a top priority of each of our staff.

Meet the staff

Karen Beerbower, ED Program Advisor

Karen Beerbower, MS, RD, LD/N, CEDRD, F.iaedp is a licensed registered dietitian and a certified eating disorder dietitian. She holds a Master of Science degree in Medical Science from the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is the president of Nutritional Guidance, Inc. and is clinical director of Blue Horizon Eating Disorder Services, LLC. Karen presently serves on the board of directors for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) and is an IAEDP Approved Supervisor and a Fellow member of IAEDP. She strives to bring her experience and expertise of more than 20 years to others through clinical service and education.

Christina Purkiss, Program Director

Christina Purkiss, MA, LMHC received a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She has previous experience working with individuals with eating disorders, as well as various other clinical disorders including substance use, depression, and anxiety. Christina’s therapeutic approach involves integrating different theoretical frameworks such as DBT and CBT based on each client’s individual needs and goals in treatment. She strives to develop a therapeutic relationship consisting of trust, respect, and collaboration in an effort to create an environment in which change can occur.

Kurry Friedell, Director of Nutritional Services

Kurry Friedell, MA, RD, LD/N, CEDRD is a licensed, registered dietitian with a Master’s Degree in Human and Health Sciences from the University of Alabama. Her strong clinical background includes pediatrics, ketogenic diet planning, bariatric, renal, cardiovascular and critical care of all ages at Brookwood Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In addition to seeing clients individually, Kurry facilitates nutrition groups and meal experiences at Blue Horizon Eating Disorder Services, LLC. Kurry is a Board Member of the Central Florida International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Chapter and a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Orlando Dietetic Association and the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals.

Stefanie Rivera Cuba, Dietitian

Stefanie Rivera Cuba MS, RD, LD/N is a licensed, registered dietitian with a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of North Florida, Brook’s College of Health. Her clinical dietetics background includes medical nutrition therapy for conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, ketogenic diet planning, eating disorders, and critical care for individuals of all ages. Stefanie is a clinical dietitian at Blue Horizon Eating Disorder Services, LLC where she facilitates nutrition assessments, education and process groups as well as meal experiences. She has had previous experience working with eating disorder clients under Dr. Kratina at Nutrition Therapy Associates in Gainesville FL. Stefanie is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Orlando Dietetic Association, and the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. Stefanie is a fluent Spanish speaker.

Deanna McCaskill, Counselor

Deanna McCaskill, MS, LMHC is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. She received her Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling in 2011 from Capella University and Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2006 from the University of Central Florida. She has prior experience working with adolescents and adults with eating disorders in inpatient and partial hospitalization settings. Deanna also has experience working with adolescents and adults with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis, and behavioral issues in outpatient, inpatient, school, and residential settings.
